A Brief History of Binghamton

In 1779, members of the Sullivan Expedition became the first Europeans to settle in Binghamton. Officially incorporated as a city in 1867, Binghamton soon came to be known as the “Valley of Opportunity,” with “Parlor City” serving as another early nickname. Following the end of the Cold War, Binghamton began to experience economic decline, due in large part to the struggles of defense-related industries.
