Broome County is located on the southern border of New York state. Approximately 205,000 people reside in Broome County. The county seat is the city of Binghamton, which is also its largest city. The county occupies 716 square miles of land and water.
A Brief History of Broome County
After a series of reorganization and division, Broome County was apportioned from the larger Tioga County in 1806. Prior to its designation as its own county, the area now known as Broome County belonged to Tioga County, Montgomery County, Tryon County, and Albany County. Albany County originally encapsulated all of the states of New York and present-day Vermont.

These days, Broome County contains the city of Binghamton; the towns of Barker, Chenango, Colesville, Conklin, Dickinson, Fenton, Kirkwood, Lisle, Maine, Nanticoke, Sanford, Triangle, Union, Vestal, Windsor; the villages of Deposit, Endicott, Johnson City, Port Dickinson, Whitney Point, and Windsor. Binghamton University is also located in Broome County and accounts for a large portion of its overall population.
